Shield

Move tokens from your wallet into your account.

Shielding moves stock tokens from your public wallet balance into your Opaque account.

Steps

  1. In the app, choose the asset and the Shield tab.
  2. Enter an amount in shares. In wallet shows what you can shield; choose it to shield everything.
  3. Choose Shield. Your browser builds the proof (a few seconds), then your wallet asks you to approve the token allowance the first time, and to send the transaction.
  4. When the transaction confirms, the amount appears under shielded and as a new note.

What is public

The transaction is sent by your wallet, so the chain records that your address moved this amount into the pool. That is the last thing the chain learns about it.

Shares and raw units

You enter shares because that is what a brokerage shows. Under the hood, the note holds the token's raw units; the split between the two is the token's multiplier, which carries dividends and splits. The app converts on the way in and out and shows the multiplier it used. Shares and raw units explains why this matters and why a shielded position keeps accruing.

Tips

  • Shield in amounts that are not unusual. A very specific quantity is easier to recognise when it leaves the pool later.
  • Shielding more than once creates more notes. The app spends up to two notes in one transaction, so many small notes may need a consolidation step; see Notes.
